What Are Dentures?
Dentures are prosthodontic devices that replace most or all teeth on one or both dental arches. These replacement teeth are designed to restore function to your bite and look just like natural teeth. Depending on your dental needs, they can be implant-supported or traditional. Traditional dentures rest on the gums and are held in place with a mild adhesive; dental implant-supported dentures are anchored directly to the jaw by prosthetic tooth roots made of titanium.
Implant-Supported vs Traditional Dentures
Traditional Dentures
Traditional dentures require a denture adhesive to keep them in place within your mouth, allowing you to chew and speak. Implant-supported dentures do not require dental adhesive. Instead, they rely on prosthetic tooth roots (usually made of titanium) embedded in the jawbone.
Implant-Supported Dentures
Implant-supported dentures are more stable, and the implants prevent bone deterioration that occurs due to missing teeth. In fact, they are the one and only restorative dentistry option that can stop bone atrophy after tooth loss.
All-on-4
All-on-4 is a type of implant-supported denture that uses four implants to support a full-arch denture on the upper or lower dental arch. The two posterior implants are placed at angles, maximizing contact with the available bone tissue and often eliminating the need for bone grafting prior to implant placement.
A dentist at our Chula Vista location will work with you to determine which type best fits your needs.
Benefits of Dentures
Improved Quality of Life
By replacing the missing teeth, you restore your ability to chew and speak.
Restored Oral Health
Missing and decaying teeth can cause a host of health problems. Removing decaying teeth and replacing them with dentures can help prevent further health issues. Dentures can also restore balance to your bite, preventing or relieving painful TMJ issues.
Boosted Self-Confidence
Dentures provide cosmetic benefits, giving you the beautiful smile you have always wanted.
Protection of Remaining Teeth
When you are missing teeth, there is excessive wear on remaining teeth because bite force is not evenly distributed. Dentures will allow you to chew and speak more naturally, distributing bite force properly.
Prevention of Bone Atrophy
Even a single missing tooth can cause jawbone atrophy and sagging facial muscles. Implant-supported dentures can stop this degenerative process.

Denture Candidacy
You may be a good candidate for dentures if you:
Are in good oral health
You must be free of oral health issues such as tooth decay and gum disease before denture treatment. This ensures a healthy foundation for your dentures. This is especially crucial for dental implant placement because compromised teeth and gums can increase your risk for implant failure.
Are missing multiple teeth
Dentures are a restorative option for patients missing most or all of the teeth. If you are only missing one tooth or a few teeth, our Chula Vista dentists offer other options such as dental crowns and dental bridges supported by implants, or a traditional dental bridge.
Do not use tobacco products
Tobacco use is linked to an increased risk of oral and overall health issues. It can also increase your risk of dental implant failure. It is best to cease use of all tobacco products and plan to break the habit permanently before your restorative treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dentures
Q. Do dentures hurt?
A. There may be some minor discomfort as you adjust to your dentures. However, this should only last a few days. If you notice gum irritation, or experience persistent or severe pain, contact our Chula Vista dentist office so we can address your issues promptly. Your dentures may just need an adjustment, which we are happy to provide.
Q. How long will my dentures last?
A. It depends on many factors, including the material your dentures are made from. Acrylic dentures typically last only 5 to 8 years with proper care. Zirconia dentures could potentially last the rest of your life. Follow proper care instructions for your type of denture, and be sure to visit our Chula vista office for regular exams and cleanings so your denture can provide you with the longest-lasting benefits.
Q. How do I care for my dentures?
A. Traditional dentures require you to remove and soak them with a denture cleaner or clean with non-abrasive toothpaste. It is also important that you remember to clean your gums and tongue. Implant-supported dentures are treated just like natural teeth. Brush and floss twice a day, and maintain dental exams and visits. Your dental team will provide you with all the instructions you need, and we are always happy to answer any questions or concerns.
